An introduction into the world of sewing, this course is ideal for kids 9 & up who show an interest in the art form. This small group class setting will allow kids to learn the basics of how to operate a sewing machine safely. They will have the opportunity to let their creativity take on new forms. Practicing eye-hand coordination, operating a sewing machine & patience. 

  • Requirement: None (Beginner)  
  • Small class sizes: 6 students 
  • Class length: 6 x 1.5hr

    Level 1: Class #1: 

      • Sewing Machine Basics: Safety, Function & Parts 
      • Practice Using Machine (without Thread)
      • Foot Control, eye-hand coordination, stirring, patience
      • Review Quiz Oral & Worksheets 

        Class #2: 

          • Sewing (on machine) without Thread
          • Worksheet Shapes & Mazes Learning to Pivot
          • Learning to Thread Machine & inserting bobbin

          Class #3: 

            • Practice Scissor Skills & Scissor Safety 
            • Sewing Shapes with Multiple layers (Paper Bag & Batting)
            • Practice Sewing multiple layers
            • Ironing Safety & how to use
            • Learning sewing curves
            • Learning Pinning & tracing Techniques (patterns & shapes)
            • Seam allowance 

              Class #4:  Project: Pillow Case 

                • Learning to follow directions (written & oral) 
                • Scissor skills (cutting out pieces for project) 
                • Pinning Practice 
                • Learning different Techniques (French Seams, etc.) 
                • Iron safety review & Practice 

                  Class #5: Project: Tote Bag 

                    • Learning use of Notions (Straps) 
                    • Hemming (Measuring) 
                    • Learning importance of reinforcement stitches 
                    • Learning difference stitch types (Zig-Zag Stitch) 

                      Class #6: Final Class 

                      • Finishing up current projects 
                      • Bonus small projects 

                      Course with all supplies provided totals $200.00 plus tax

                      • Requirement: completed Junior Sew-ciology 1

                      • Review (test knowledge) 
                      • Introduction to hand sewing 
                      • Threading needle 
                      • Tying knots 
                      • Different Stitching Techniques (Running, Ladder, Cross, Blanket & Whip Stitch) 

                      Class #2: 

                      • Introduction to different types of fabrics & Uses 
                      • Hand sewing project (Pin-cushion: for future use) 

                      Class #3 & 4: Project: PJ Pant Pattern 

                      • Learning to read a commercial pattern
                      • Learning to take body measurements (to determine sizing)
                      • Learning the importance of Pre-washing fabrics  
                      • Laying out pattern pieces on fabrics
                      • Cutting out pattern
                      • Learning to sew a garment
                      • Importance of Directional Sewing
                      • Using all skills developed from Junior Sew-ciology 1 & 2 

                      Class #5: Project: Zipper Pencil Case
