An introduction into the world of sewing, this small group class setting is perfect to learn the basics of how to operate a sewing machine safely. Practicing eye-hand coordination, operating a sewing machine & patience.
- Small class sizes: 6 students
- Class length: 8 x 1.5hr
- Duo tang will be provided for students to create their own personal resource reference.

Class #1:
- Sewing Machine Basics: Safety, Function & Parts
- Practice Using Machine (without Thread)
- Foot Control, eye-hand coordination, stirring, patience
- Review Quiz Oral & Worksheets
Class #2:
- Sewing (on machine) without Thread
- Worksheet Shapes & Mazes Learning to Pivot
- Learning to Thread Machine & inserting bobbin
- Dot-to-Dot worksheets (with different colour threads to practice & reinforce threading the machine
Class #3:
- Practice Scissor Skills & Scissor Safety
- Sewing Shapes with Multiple layers (Paper Bag & Batting)
- Practice Sewing multiple layers
- Ironing Safety & how to use
- Learning sewing curves
- Learning Pinning & tracing Techniques (patterns & shapes)
- Seam allowance
Class #4:
- Introduction to different types of fabrics & Uses
Project: Apron
- Learning how to follow directions (written & oral)
- Learning how to cut out pattern pieces
- Learning the importance of Pre-washing fabrics
- Laying out pattern pieces on fabrics
- Learning hemming
- Learning to sew a garment
- Importance of Directional Sewing
Class #5:
- Introduction to hand sewing
- Threading needle
- Tying Knots
- Different Stitching Techniques (Running, Ladder, Cross, Blanket & Whip Stitch)
- Hand sewing project (Pin-cushion: for future use)
- Making button holes on machine
- Hand sewing on different styles of buttons
Class #6:
- Zippers (dress zipper, invisible zipper, jacket zipper)
Project: Zipper Pencil Case
Class #7 & 8
Project: PJ Pant Pattern
- Learning to read a commercial pattern
- Learning to take body measurements (to determine sizing)
